The String Cheese Incident unveils their new limited edition live release, Trick Or Treat, on October 27, 2009. The timing is fitting, considering the nine-disc box set was culled from a variety of epic SCI "Hulaween" shows. From Atlanta's Variety Playhouse (1998) Philadelphia's Electric Factory (1999), Portland, Maine's State Theatre (2000), New York City (2001), Shrine Auditorium (2002) in Los Angeles, Sin City's Cox Pavillion (2003) and the Exhibition Center @ Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin (2004) - Trick or Treat journeys through the years to re-visit some of the band's most classic Incidents from Halloween's past.

This exclusive box set offers seven of SCI's famous Halloween cover sets in their entirety, including String Cheese performing songs by such artists as the Beatles, Beastie Boys, KC & The Sunshine Band, Phish and many others.

Hi Family,

"And if my words did glow, with the gold of sunshine. And if my tunes were played on the harp unstrung..." Please help these words to ripple... ripple becomes a wave... wave becomes a tsunami... pretty soon love and compassion are the law of the land and we can dance in peace and unity!

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
-Fully Committed

It is an old Movie theater called The El Rey and they just opened it up for shows last year. The sound is great at the venue, not as much dance floor as we would like but it will just have to be a butter dance floor all over and in the balcony. So whos all coming? I am think it might be a butter run because they are playing at Marilyn's the next day in Sac. Oh yeah did I mention that Dave Brogan of ALO is sitting in with them for this run?

In lean times SoCal gun owners trade arms for eats

By THOMAS WATKINS Associated Press Writer
Posted: 12/07/2008 08:48:20 AM PST

LOS ANGELES—The guns versus butter economic model appears to be tilting in the dairy spread's favor in one inner city neighborhood, where record numbers of gun owners are giving up their weapons in return for gift cards to buy food and other goods.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department ended its annual Gifts for Guns program in Compton on Sunday, allowing residents to anonymously relinquish firearms in return for $100 gift cards for Ralphs supermarkets, Target department stores or Best Buy electronics stores. People get double that amount for turning in assault rifles.

In years past, Target and Best Buy were the cards of choice, with residents wanting electronic goods and other presents for the holidays. In this recessionary year, however, things are different.

"The majority of the people want the food cards," said sheriff's Sgt. Byron Woods. "People just don't have the money to buy the food these days."

Authorities said Sunday that a record 965 firearms and two hand grenades were handed in during the two weekends the program was in operation. That's more than in any other year and easily eclipses last year's total of 387 guns collected over both weekends.

"One guy said he had just got laid off from his job," Woods said. "He turned in five guns and said it would really help him to put food on the family's table."

By the time sheriff's deputies finished totaling up guns collected on Saturday and Sunday they expected to have about 1,000.

Gun owners dropped their weapons off at a local grocery store parking lot, where a deputy pulled them from the trunks of cars—no questions asked. The weapons are tested to see if they have been used in crimes, then destroyed.

Compton, a working-class city of about 95,000 in southern Los Angeles County, has long struggled against gang and gun violence. Its troubled history has been chronicled in such gangsta rap albums as N.W.A.'s "Straight Outta Compton."

The annual drive started in 2005 after a spike in killings, though the murder rate has since dropped.

It is similar to those conducted in other parts of the country, including San Francisco and New York.

"It is so important to get these guns off the streets," Woods said. "You never know where (they) could have ended up."

He said most of those who turn in weapons are "family people."

"They want some money to help take care of their families," Woods added.

Some people rummaged in closets or under beds to pull out antique weapons that had been in the family for years. One man brought in a Soviet-era semiautomatic carbine.

"If that got into the wrong hands of gang bangers, they could kill several people within minutes," Woods said. "Our biggest fear is a house getting burglarized and these guns getting taken."

Most of the approximately $100,000 needed to pay for this year's gift cards comes from Los Angeles County. The three stores and the city of Compton, which contracts with the county Sheriff's Department for police protection, also donate funds.

FLOATING DOWNSTREAM

Dear Friends and Fans of Hot Buttered Rum,

I am writing to let you know of my recent decision to part ways with HBR. This decision was by no means an easy one, nor a sudden one. After a great deal of introspection and band discussion, our separation emerged as the only viable way for everyone involved to move forward.

I want to take this moment to express deepest gratitude to you, the Butter Community, for your infinite love and support. This incredible community has always been as important to me as the music itself. You, more than anything, have allowed and encouraged me to pour my heart and soul into HBR, and you have given me great hope that people can make the world a better place. For this I offer sincere thanks.

If you feel sadness, I empathize with you over what is being lost -- the unique synergy between the five of us was indeed magic. But certainly music and magic live on. I hope you will share in a feeling of excitement for me and for HBR as we journey forward along separate paths. I continue to be an advocate for HBR's success, and eagerly await the new songs that my brothers and their future collaborations will yield.

I also expect this time of change to recharge my own creative reservoir for music and other endeavors. I look forward to channeling many incredible connections into fruitful collaborations.

Further down the road we'll meet again. But for now, this is it, high times...
Zachary Matthews
November 30, 2008

I should love to satisfy all, if I possibly can; but in trying to satisfy all, I may be able to satisfy none. I have, therefore, arrived at the conclusion that the best course is to satisfy one's own conscience and leave the world to form its own judgment, favorable or otherwise.

Just a quick disclaimer: this is not your usual show review, for two reasons:

1) This was not a usual show by any means; and
2) I'm currently taking a music appreciation class (everyone should be so lucky!), and am required to attend four Western, fine arts concerts this semester and then write reviews for each. Below you will find the exact paper that I will be turning in tomorrow. I was somewhat hesitant to post this, since it's so lengthy and even though I love to write, I rarely share my writing with others, but have decided to share my thoughts with you good folks, knowing that you'll be kind. : )

Much love to you all and hope to see many of your bright, smiling faces at the Evergreen this weekend!
__________________________

Aaron Redner & Friends: Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley played host to a talented array of musicians on the evening of Thursday, October 23, 2008. Guided by Aaron Redner on violin, who was classically trained at the New England Conservatory of Music but is best known for his fiddle and mandolin playing and songwriting in the Bay Area’s popular band Hot Buttered Rum, a cast of seven performed Antonio Vivaldi’s classic concerti grossi “Four Seasons” with the creative twist of injecting between each individual concerto a variety of seasonally themed tunes, performed in different genres by changing players. Redner amassed an impressive amount of talent on the evening’s roster. “Four Seasons” was skillfully presented by Karen Shinozaki on violin, Eugene Sor on cello, Michelle Maruyama on viola, JungHae Kim on harpsicord, Erin Benim on violin, and Bryan Horne on contrabass, with Redner as the primary soloist (referred to hereafter as the “Baroque ensemble”). Horne and Redner remained on stage throughout the evening, joined for the non-Baroque music by Adam Roszkiewicz on archtop electric guitar and Erik Yates on banjo, flute and acoustic guitar. Finally, Redner, Horne and Yates were joined by Nat Keefe and Zachary Matthews to bring together all players of Hot Buttered Rum to round out the evening.

The Throckmorton Theater is nothing short of breathtaking, complete with a rich blue and deep red palette, whimsical paintings of a jester and court musicians on one wall, women resting and playing flute on the opposite wall, gods and the crescent moon above, framed by dramatic clouds clinging to the theater’s ceiling. A small depiction of Mt. Tamalpais hanging just above center stage reminds the audience of the iconic natural asset just beyond the theater’s ornately adorned walls. The highly decorative harpsichord harkened back to the 18th century and hinted at the unique performance that was to come.
House lights dimmed, the audience fell silent, and suddenly, from the balcony above stage left, “La Primavera” (spring) announced itself in the form of Erik Yates:

Spring has come, and birds greet it
Festively with a cheerful song;
And with the breath of gentle breezes
Springs trickle with a sweet murmur.

Lightning and thunder, elected to announce it,
Come and cover the air with a black cloak.
Once they are quiet, the birds
Return to their enchanting song.

Then on the pleasant, flowered meadow
A goatherd, with his faithful dog at his side,
Sleeps to the sweet murmur of fronds and plants.

To the festive sound of a rustic bagpipe
Nymphs and shepherds dance under the beloved canopy
At the brilliant appearance of spring.

Then began the familiar first movement of “Four Seasons” and the gorgeous music filled the hall sweetly. The theater is not large by any means, but it was amazing to hear how just seven acoustic instruments could create such a powerful, well-rounded polyphony. Applause erupted after the first movement. Upon the second movement entered surprisingly a dancer veiled in white, adding to the somewhat seductive, sweet melody. The harpsichord shined through beautifully in the third movement with its unique sound that seemingly mimics an organ and a harp simultaneously. Redner’s solo was impressive, with double stops, fast exchanges and a playful dance-like melody (although it was in duple meter). It was unique to hear him play while being backed by two other violins and a viola – very rich indeed! A somewhat brief ritornello to the main theme brought “La Primavera” to a delightful end. After the applause died down, a member of the audience couldn’t contain his amazement and cried, “That was wonderful, Aaron!” which prompted more applause of agreement from the content spectators.

Next came a cast change where all of the players exited the stage save Redner and Horne, who were joined by Roszkiewicz and Yates. Aaron noted to the audience that he “wanted to change it up” and then introduced this new ensemble as “The Swing Cats.” Judging by the somewhat surprised yet pleased looks four players faces, I’m not entirely sure this moniker was discussed with the group prior to their performance. The quartet began with “Shine” by Stéphane Grapelli and Django Reinhardt, which decidedly changed the feel of the evening’s performance. Yates and Horne seemed especially animated during this tune to the delight of the audience and players alike. Their second piece was a seductive Gershwin number entitled “Summertime.” This smooth tune was delightfully jazzy and induced a notable flute solo by Yates, causing Redner to exclaim, “Don’t stop now!” as Yates appeared to be wrapping it up. The gents onstage urged one another on with encouraging “Yeahs” sprinkled throughout, while Horne, who had been introduced as “Papa,” would throw in a “ba-bap” by rapping his hands on his double bass, affectionately referred to as Dark Chocolate.

Another quick cast changed back to the Baroque ensemble led to the “L’Estate” (summer) poem recitation by Nat Keefe, once again from the balcony:

Under the harsh season ignited by the sun
Man and flock languish, and the pine burns;
The cuckoo offers his voice, and, soon heard,
The young turtledove and goldfinch sing.

Zephyr blows gently, but suddenly
Boreas offers opposition to his neighbor;
And the shepherd weeps, because he fears
A severe storm in the offing – and his destiny.

The repose of his tired limbs is disturbed
By the fear of lightning and fiery thunder,
And by a furious swarm of flies and wasps.

Unfortunately, his fears are justified.
The sky thunders and fulminates, and hail
Flattens ears of corn and majestic grains.

This concerto began on a surprisingly light note, perhaps hinting at the sluggishness brought on by the summer’s heat. Redner on violin, Sor on cello and Kim on harpsichord played together brilliantly, increasing the rhythm to a near frantic pace at times, and then contrasting with much calmer segments, finishing off with a very tight, dramatic finish to the first movement. The dancer once again emerged during the second movement, this time sans billowing hat but with the addition of brightly colored flowers tucked into her tresses. Here, she mimicked a puppet on a string, matching her movements to the beat. The highlight of the third movement was the incredibly succinct bowing technique on the strings exhibited by the players. This intensity actually caused me to lose my breath, very likely due to the fact that I stopped breathing momentarily. Emotion swept over me as this concerto struck its final note, and all I could do was emphatically say “Wow!” (I literally wrote that in my notes). Thankfully, intermission was up next, allowing me to catch my breath and prepare for the second helping of amazing musical entertainment.

After the intermission, The Swing Cats performed the popular tune “Autumn Leaves” to perfectly set the stage for the next Vivaldi concerto. After a swift cast change, “L’Autumno” (autumn) was recited by Zachary Matthews:

The peasant celebrates the blissful pleasure
Of a happy harvest with dances and songs,
And, glowing with the liquor of Bacchus,
Many complete their enjoyment with sleep.

The air, tempered by pleasure, makes
Everyone give up dances and songs.
It is the season that invites so many
To the great enjoyment of a sweet sleep.

At dawn the hunters are off to the hunt
With horns, rifles, and dogs.
The wild beast flees, and they follow its trail.

Frightened already, and fatigued by the noise
Of rifles and dogs, wounded, it threatens
Languidly to flee, but overcome, it dies.

This concerto seemed familiar, as if a variation on the spring theme, or perhaps in the same key. The passionate music was absolutely magnificent and flawlessly executed, and the harpsichord really stood out during the first movement. The second movement shifted the tone of the piece, where the ensemble sans Redner slowed and took on a melancholy quality, perhaps hinting at the sad aspect of the fall and dying that comes along with the season. As per the other concertos, the second movement also reintroduced the dancer, who this time seemed more distracting to me than anything. This aspect of the performance certainly was a departure from other classic musical presentations. The final movement had a very loping rhythm to it, which I construed to be the fleeing of the “wild beast” referenced in “L’Autumno” recited prior to this concerto.

After another eruption of applause, the focus was shifted to the balcony for one last reading, this time “L’Inverno” (winter), passionately delivered by Willow Horne:

To tremble from cold in the icy snow,
In the harsh breath of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping out feet every moment,
Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold.

Before the fire to pass peaceful,
Contented days while the rain outside pours down.

To walk on the ice and, at a slow pace
(For fear of falling), move carefully.

To make a bold turn, slip, fall down.
To go on the ice once more and run hard
Until the ice cracks and breaks up.

To hear the Sirocco, Boreas, and all
The winds at war leave their iron gates:
This is winter, but, even so, what joy it brings!

This concerto opened in a minor key, full of mystery and a bit of fear of what harshness awaits. The swift pace conveyed the tendency of creatures to rush from place to place to find refuge from the cold of the winter months. The dancer made her final appearance, this time donning an Asian style mask and a cloth draped over her head and shoulders. Although we had seen small amounts previously in the evening, there was a nice section that had the stringed instrumentalists plucking their strings, a technique called pizzicato. The third movement contained many runs that started high and descended through the notes, alluding to falling rain, to sweetly wrap up the final seasonal concerto.

One last cast change, but this time, Roszkiewicz stayed behind and Keefe and Matthews joined Redner, Horne and Yates onstage to form the whole of Hot Buttered Rum. “Butter” (as HBR’s devoted fans lovingly refer to the band) launched into Bill Monroe’s “Footprints in the Snow.” With Redner and Matthews on vocals and Yates on banjo, the Butter boys rounded up in the Old Time way to toss around the lead for a few bars each to highlight their individual talents. Next up was the traditional fiddle tune “Cold Frosty Morning” to continue the seasonal themes of the evening. To bring the evening to an end, the players laid down their instruments, stepped to the foot of the stage to deliver “Birds and the Bees” a cappella:

The birds and the bees are singing and buzzing
And rattling around her kitchen screen door
It might be a while or it might be real soon
'Til nature takes its course

I'm thinking of course I don't want to settle down
The life that I choose is from town to town
But the sound the night's song on the smell of the spring
I succumb to the buzz of the birds and the bees

He's got a new kind of smile
Light of the full moon's been shining a while
Into her bedroom door
She says I'm my mother's best son
But I don't know what it's like
To be a fertile woman
So I can't say that she's wrong

The birds and the bees are singing and buzzing
And rattling around her kitchen screen door
It might be a while or it might be real soon
'Til nature takes its course

I'm thinking, of course I don't want to settle down
The life that I choose is from town to town
But the sound the night's song on the smell of spring
I succumb to the buzz of the birds and the bees
I succumb to the buzz of the birds and the bees

The evening was absolutely superb in terms of level of professionalism and the musicianship demonstrated, highly entertaining, and especially distinctive for those in the audience who follow Hot Buttered Rum’s (or other popular) music more so than classical. Redner smoothly stepped out of his “usual” role and took on the entire performance – and especially the Baroque – with sophistication and flair. It was exceptionally impressive that while all of the Baroque Ensemble players had the various pieces of sheet music for their reference, Redner played the entire night sans music before him, and he did so ostensibly flawlessly. The nearly full house reciprocated with deep appreciation for the gift of music so beautifully created and shared.

Who's headed out to see Aaron perform Vivaldi at the Throckmorton on 10/23? This sounds like a really interesting night--and not your "typical" classical performance. Check out this interview with Aaron on at www.hotbutteredrum.net:

http://www.hotbutteredrum.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2524&Itemid=46

And here's the formal notice, as copied from the HBR site:

Aaron Redner, Hot Buttered Rum's fiddler and song-writer extraordinaire, will step out of that role on October 23rd to host at Mill Valley's beautiful 142 Throckmorton Theatre a very special evening of classical, swing, jazz, and bluegrass music. The acoustic show will revolve around Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons masterpiece, played by a string quartet joined by Redner on violin. Between each individual concerto, Redner and company will play complementary music from other genres, with each piece related to the preceding "season." This unique format promises a diverse evening of music that will contemporize and reinterpret Vivaldi's work by sandwiching it between and contrasting it against more modern pieces.

Redner will be joined by a stellar cast of local musicians, including members of Hot Buttered Rum. The instrumentation promises to be as varied as the music and players, with harpsichord and guitar played in addition to the string quartet.

An interview with Redner about this special event is available on this site's interview section.

For more information or to purchase tickets in advance, go to the Throckmorton Theatre website.

Wow, another great weekend has finally ended. Still spinning from
the fun and travelling for the last few days.

Thanks Butter for providing us with another adventure with friends
and family and lots of fun.

Kelly, Amanda and I made it to Bend , but had to split sets (21+
show). It was a nice way to start the run, and a beautiful afternoon
in the high-desert.

Portland was a very high energy affair, which got off to an acoustic
front of stage start from Poor Man's Whiskey , getting the ball
rolling nicely.

Butter just killed it. The addition of Matt Butler and Asher Fulero
for the end of the first set, and the whole second set gave a whole
new dynamic to the sound. (although I have seen that lineup a few
times now, and I DO prefer my Butter straight up, it was a nice
energy addition and really filled out the room) And while the
setlist was fairly rock and roll, the highlights for me were Zac's
beautiful Duncan (love Paul Simon covers), Reckless Tex , and TN Jed
from BCH. Wow, that didn't suck at all. Susi, thanks for the glitter
and the love in PDX. We we're surrounded by family all night long,
and it was incredible.

So while the family was making the Train trip II, Kelly and I went
home and got Amanda and headed up I-5 to Seattle . Not knowing what
to expect, we ended up getting the the room at about 5:00 and found
Michael Scott and Ziegy. Beautiful club, with candles on the tables,
and that swanky Jazz club feel, we sat down for dinner on the rail
and settled in.

What went down that night was amazing. I don't know how people
travelling with the band reacted to the seated club, but there were
many many new faces. And they had come out for a night on the town,
dinner and music. What they were treated to was an incredible
showcase of a professional band really hitting their stride. How
hard must it be to play to a seated crowd? The boys had a backdrop
behind them with lights, that framed them beautifully. And we were
treated to a fantastic setlist. We dressed Amanda Lynn up in a
little Bee costume, and put her cape on, so she was ready to go, and
danced all over the table/rail at the front of the stage. Honey Bee
and Amanda Lynn were treats that she really enjoyed, but after some
attempts at climbing up to Redner's equipment, and kicking over
Michelle's water glass, she tired, the set ended and we went outside
to listed to the reactions of people we hadn't met before to the
first set. What wonderful exposure for the boys, and what
appreciation from the new fans. For those of us who are used to the
dancing and frivolity that accompanies the usual meltdown, this WAS a
little subdued. But I sat there that night, with family, with my
daughter, with all of these new people and I was amazed at how far
all of us had come. Kelly and I talked the whole way back from
Seattle about how much the Butter family means to us. Adam and Susi,
we never even had a chance to say goodbye that night, but I know that
we will see each other soon. Isn't that a wonderful thing?

So Sunday I woke up and had to work in Hood River until two, so I was
still fencing Eugene . Until I realized that Michael and Deadesq were
already half way to PDX on the train, Butch was in route, Marilyn was
dropping the kids off, Eileen had a Thai place lined up for dinner,
Liora was already at the WOW, so off I headed. This time without the
girls for one last go around. ( I seem to find myself in this type
of FOMO situation quite often ) And although I was pretty tired from
all of the driving, I was ready to go by the time the guys came on.
Holy start.... Ginseng, Virginia 's>silas, Horseshoe?!? !
Cumberland ?! ?!? I think that I blistered my feet dancing that
night. It was HOT up on the rail, the lights at the WOW are
incredibly how, and the crowd was moving all night long. I remember
talking with Aaron in Bend this past summer about how it is so
amazing how Butter can still have people in a deep groove for slower
songs. And this night was no exception. Two smokin sets, Butter
awards for Chris and Britney who worked tirelessly street teaming
this run, and danced their asses off every night of it, and FOUR
Freaking Encores. Well deserved thanks for Josh, Justin and Andy,
and the run was over. Incredible.

So now as I am thinking about all of you out there that I didn't get
to see this past weekend, Kelly and I will start talking about the
next family reunions at the Fillmore weekend in Nov, and at the
Oriental to ring in the new year. Missing you all and loving you
more.

Thanks again my dear, dear family.

Here's a message from Nat regarding the Conscious Alliance food drive associated with the Boulder Fox shows next weekend. Butter's Colorado tour kicks off Wednesday, 10/8, at Hodi's Half Note in Fort Collins, followed by an appearance at Aspen's Belly Up on Thursday, 10/9, all leading up to what will surely be a fantastic weekend in Boulder. We all know what a worthy cause Conscious Alliance is, so please don't forget to bring your canned food!!! See you all on the dance floor--and kickball field! ;-)
much love,
Susi

From Nat:

Hello All,

I am getting excited for Hot Buttered Rum's two-night run at the Fox Theater in Boulder. First of all, the weekend is going to rock. The band is in good form and we've got a lot of new material that will have its Colorado premiere. We're also hosting a Community Kickball and BBQ Party on the Saturday afternoon before the second show. Anyone who was at the last Kickball BBQ knows we are in for a good time. (Check out hotbutteredrum.net for details).

Secondly, many of you know that we are hosting a food drive with Conscious Alliance. If you bring ten cans of healthy food (stuff you'd want to feed your own kids) you will receive a poster by Rob Marx. Rob just showed me a preview of the poster and it is really good!

Monday after the show, our band and crew are driving up to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where we will distribute the food and supplies we've collected at an elementary school. Pine Ridge, home of Lakota Indians, is among the poorest counties in the U.S. and can use the help. We will personally see that your donations are put to good use. I look forward to reporting back on our trip!

We are constantly amazed by the loving community that has grown around our band, and I'm floored again and again by the generosity of the Butter family. But we know you can outdo even yourselves! So I'm throwing down the gauntlet and challenging YOU to make this a huge success. If you can afford it, bring 15 or 20 cans of food. If you can afford it, donate money as well. If you aren't going to be at the shows, you can donate money online (consciousalliance.org/donate.htm). Or, ask Conscious Alliance how you can help future food drives. Above all, make sure that all your people know about the food drive and how they can participate.

Thank you! I look forward to playing with y'all soon!

cheers,
Nat Keefe

For better or worse, the Bouse-Eaton clan will not be making it to Las Tortugas this year. :-( But there’s good news about Butter for those of you lucky enough to have cabins or those of you who might consider camping or staying off-site. Butter will be performing on both Thursday night (October 30, at the kickoff party) and on Halloween. The Thursday night slot isn’t until 11:15 pm, which gives you Cali folks plenty of time to get to the lodge after work and still catch some Las Tortugas kickoff Butter. Shoot, with the time difference, you could even make it in from the Midwest or east coast in plenty of time to catch the show. ;-)

If this news is tempting to any of you still without tickets, lodging and ticket info. can be found at: http://evergreenhalloween.inticketing.com. Apparently, there is still reserved camping available on-site, as well as free camping just across the street and several hotels and B&Bs within 5 miles of Evergreen Lodge. And if you haven't been to the lodge in late October, you're missing out. It's absolutely gorgeous!

Please spread the word about the 11:15 Thursday slot to any other boards or folks you think might be interested. And have fun!!!

I know there are a ton of families descending on the Colorado mountains next month for Yarmony, and we're planning some fantastic activities for the kiddos at the kids area. But because children under 12 are free, we're having a hard time getting a count of just how many children will be rockin' it out with Moms and Dads. We want to make sure we have enough supplies for everyone, so if you are bringing kids to Yarmony, would you please hit me at susi.bouse@gmail.com? I'd like to know how many kids you're bringing and what their ages are. Family names would help, too, simply so I don't end up double counting. Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested (Cornmeal groups? Greensky groups?). And because there are a lot of folks who aren't on any of these lists, would you please speak up for your friends, too?

If you're interested in helping out in some way--leading an activity or helping someone else lead one--and would be willing to donate either an hour of your time or some cash toward supplies, please let me know!

I, for one, am STOKED about the music and the family reunion! See you there!

I can't tell you the setlist but I do remember getting a Reckless Tex which was so good to hear. Haven't heard that one in a long time. I believe I saw them bring it back to some set lists recently and it's the perfect time to do so. Plus the second set was an all request set which was a lot of fun. It seemed like a fairly long set too, maybe a little more than an hour and a half it seemed.

Sadly, I had to sit this show on the side (which really was the best seat in the house!) since I am recovering from knee surgery. It was so fun to just watch the guys play music, and watch all the dancing people getting down. I was doing my best chair dance and it was really hard to not get up and boogie during Poison Oak. But today, my knee feels really good and I have to believe it was the healing power of music that helped. So, thanks HBR and all y'all who shared in the energy last night :-)

(sorry, this ended up being pretty long...)

I was really looking forward to Saturday night's Butter fix.... most of my show friends were in CO for RRE but I was stuck in San Diego because I had to work, and on Saturday too! I was sooo bummed. But then Butter & TLG announced their tour, which included a stop in SD at a new venue on the beach, The Wavehouse (http://www.wavehouse.com/home.asp) in Mission Beach. The Wavehouse has been there for a few years as a restaurant & bar, but I had never been. It's in an area of San Diego that's inhabited mostly by tourists & drunk college kids, and is right next to the beach boardwalk amusement park, Belmont Park (complete w/ an old wooden roller coaster). As the name implies, they have an endless wave machine that you can try to surf on. It's right next to another venue, Cane's, which I'm not a big fan of, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the Wavehouse.

I spoke to Nat before the show and asked him what the venue was like. His response: "I feel like I'm on 90210." LOL, about as I expected. That whole area along the boardwalk has the 90210 vibe going on.

The show was to start at 8:00, but my ride was late picking me up so I heard Busted in Utah as I was walking up, trying to find the entrance. I waited "patiently" in line and finally got in to the venue about half-way through The Fox. I freakin LOVED the venue! It's outdoors, and set up all beach-party style, with fire pits and hammock chairs, and chairs/tables along the sides & in the back. There were wooden walkways & multiple bars, and SAND! The stage was huge too, and was set up so you could either dance in the sand, or on the walkways. The sound was great, and was loud enough to hear wherever you were, even from outside the fence on the beach. And, there were in & out priveleges too! My only complaint, and it wasn't really MY complaint as I don't drink that much, was that the drinks were pretty pricey. But I'm told it was comparable to the House of Blues, and really, what else would you expect from a themed beach bar amidst a boardwalk amusement park?

On to the show itself... I loved the show! They played a good mix of old favorites, and a few newer ones I hadn't heard them play before, including the Paul Simon cover Duncan and a Mother Hips cover, with a few California songs thrown in for good measure. Honkeytonk Tequilla had Bryan, Aaron, & Nat chugging Patron on stage. The drummer for TLG came out for 2 songs, which added a nice extra layer to their sound. I have to admit, I do like percussion! The show ended w/ a smokin Cumberland Blues that had us all kicking up sand and singing along.

TLG was on next, and my calves were aching from the extra workout that goes along with dancing on sand, so I found the friends I went there with and we planted ourselves on a wooden boardwalk right between the soundboard and one of the bars. Since the stage was so big (& tall), I had no problem seeing from there. And of course the sound was awesome right there next to the sbd! I'm not all that familiar w/ their stuff, but I enjoyed their set. I love Trevor Garrod's voice. It's very distinctive and somewhat mesmerizing. It was also easier to enjoy the light show from back there, as you get a good vantage of the whole stage, plus I wasn't at a height where the lights were shining right into my eyes (which was a slight problem while I was dancing up front). Erik sat in for a song on flute, which I thought was a beautiful addition to the TLG sound. TLG is definitely a rockin band. At one point, Josh Clark stood alone, center stage, head back, eyes closed and fingers flying as he shredded away, while white lights went off behind him and illuminated him in silhouette. Wow. I finally get why all those early twenty-something boys look up to him the way they do. He really is a rock god.

All in all, a fun show in a super fun new venue! It was only the 2nd "big" show ever held there, the first being Fishbone the night before. I loved it! As this is pretty new to them, I'm hoping they don't make many changes to their current policies (like in/out privs!), and I hope they keep booking bands I like there. Winston's is still my favorite local bar, but that's just b/c I live w/in walking distance. But it's closer than the Belly Up, and it is CERTAINLY better than the SD House of Blues!

The idea is to have one new song posted on my site each week. The spark has really worked and I am already on week number 4, which means I have already uploaded 4 new songs.
Each song posted is totally original and unique to the going's on in my life for that week. I have vowed to follow through with the weekly creation for one full year, so that means at the end of the year I will have a total of 52 new, original songs.

Sitting around the table at Pizza Inferno several people, including me, were expressing worry about the impending show at The Fillmore that night. Were the boys going to be too tired after flying in from NYC? "No, I've been told they play best when exhausted" someone said. How were ticket sales? "Around 600 tickets had been sold. There was no real no improvement over last year's sales but that's not surprising because no one wants to pay the Ticket Bastard service fees" someone else said. Finally someone said, "I just feel so sorry that the guys have to walk into The Fillmore with no decorations. No one had stepped up this year."

There was a certain doom in the air. The night before was one hell of a night for music in the area. Yonder, Five Eyed Hand, Magic Gravy, and Blue Turtle Seduction had played. Large numbers of folks were going to Lotus or Yonder in Santa Cruz. Promotion in the Bay Area for the Butter show had been pretty slim. I joked it didn't matter and that the 15 people going to the show would have fun anyway.

After Pizza Inferno we popped over to Arizona Steve's stylish pad for a few drinks and some pre-show merriment. I got to meet Scramble who would be on stage later that night. Cool!

Soon enough we found ourselves within the front 3 rows of The Fillmore with tons of friends and family around. People were all decked out with disco ball necklaces, capes and glitter. Looking behind me The Fillmore was pleasantly full and the fears of the band playing to 15 people were subsided.

Poor Man's Whiskey opening the show was a huge improvement over last year's "That One Guy".

They played with incredible energy and really got the crowd going. They have a really interesting sound and can go from Bluegrass to Metal to Electronica at whiplash speeds. A definite highlight from their set was Terrapin Station with the crowd pumping fists "Terrapin"da de da de da. They also did this electronica song with a Theremin that was amazing, funny, and had me dancing my ass off. At one point the dude playing the Theremin, dressed in Brady Bunch Striped pants, loud polyester shirt, jean jacket and Uncle Rodney Glasses was basically dry humping the Theremin to get it to play and it sounded great! To close the set they brought a bunch of the Butter Boys on stage and did a thrash metal version of Butter's 3.2. Believe it our not it worked pretty well. I thought to myself I'd see these guys anytime.

During the break between the bands I wandered around a bit. I wondered who all these people were. Lots of faces in the crowd I had never seen before. The place was nicely filled and even though it wasn't close to a sell out there were without a doubt more people then the year before. The fanbase was growing for sure. Looking up at the theatrical red curtains and purple chandeliers that hung from the rafters of The Fillmore ceiling I didn't mind no decorations adorning the stage. It didn't need it and all of a sudden I got a feeling that this was going to be one serious show.

The boys took the stage and the crowd erupted joyfully singing Swing and Sway. It was a perfect song to start off the night and I for one was throwin' up my hands and cryn' out for more....oooooo whoooo.

I was stoked to finally hear a new song, "Day Trader", outta the band mid way through the first set. It has a lot of lyrical qualities encouraging the listener to take advantage of life, but I kinda felt like I've been knocked over with the sentiment a few times before. I think my personal jury is out on whether or not I like it. Sometimes these things grow on me, and I was kinda hoping for the song I know Aaron has in his back pocket. I guess it will come when ready.

The first set really took off for me at "Banjo Rock and Roll". Eric was on fire and people in front were getting off dancing in a modified Twist. Total fun. The energy just intensified with a huge Always Be the Moon and then Bam! They floored the hardcore fanbase with Reckless Tex! 100's of phones popped out. People were text messaging like crazy. Taking pictures. High fives everywhere. People singing loudly. It was intense! After 580 shows and 8 really bad years of politics it was without a doubt time to get this cowboy the fuck outta here! I don't care why they did it. Don't wanna analyze why now? I was just thrilled to be singing every word.

Set break was a tad long but it gave everyone a chance to catch their breath. The first set was just flawless. The band looked so happy and comfortable on the stage rather then nervous and unsure as they had the year before. My early fears of doom were put to rest.....buried way more then 6 feet under.

Second set was every bit as good as the first. Maybe better. There were many highlights but it was the "I've Got a Feeling" which really proved how far this Stringless Band has come. This was out and out rock and roll. Aaron nailed the fuck outta the thing. His voice edgy, raspy, strong, hallowed over the audience with fierce intensity. He totally took it to a new level and I wanted to rush him a hot cup mint tea to sooth his vocal cords after. Whoa. And who can't help but crack themselves up over Nat singing "everybody had a wet dream" Just perfect.

Well we danced and had an amazing time through the whole show and I was never ready for it to end. Not for a minute.

After we went to Dave Sheel's house and talked about what a great weekend of music we had in the Bay Area this weekend and how blessed we all were to have each other.

After we went home and put Bundt to bed at 4:20 to get a few minutes of sleep before his flight east while Steve and I giggled and I sent incoherent emails to the list. Sorry folks.....

At 7:00 still up we drove Bundt out to SFO for his B-Day week in NY and then hit Jack in the Box on the way home.

I finally feel asleep at 11am, 26 and a half hours after I had last woke up. Sweet dreams were had for sure.
