FLOATING DOWNSTREAM

Dear Friends and Fans of Hot Buttered Rum,

I am writing to let you know of my recent decision to part ways with HBR. This decision was by no means an easy one, nor a sudden one. After a great deal of introspection and band discussion, our separation emerged as the only viable way for everyone involved to move forward.

I want to take this moment to express deepest gratitude to you, the Butter Community, for your infinite love and support. This incredible community has always been as important to me as the music itself. You, more than anything, have allowed and encouraged me to pour my heart and soul into HBR, and you have given me great hope that people can make the world a better place. For this I offer sincere thanks.

If you feel sadness, I empathize with you over what is being lost -- the unique synergy between the five of us was indeed magic. But certainly music and magic live on. I hope you will share in a feeling of excitement for me and for HBR as we journey forward along separate paths. I continue to be an advocate for HBR's success, and eagerly await the new songs that my brothers and their future collaborations will yield.

I also expect this time of change to recharge my own creative reservoir for music and other endeavors. I look forward to channeling many incredible connections into fruitful collaborations.

Further down the road we'll meet again. But for now, this is it, high times...

I should love to satisfy all, if I possibly can; but in trying to satisfy all, I may be able to satisfy none. I have, therefore, arrived at the conclusion that the best course is to satisfy one's own conscience and leave the world to form its own judgment, favorable or otherwise.

Very sad news indeed and I will miss Zach's playing, singing, and smile in the Butter line up. When I read this news this morning this is what came to my mind first:
Every day we get closer and closer
farther away from words we say
I don't know just how long I could stay
Or is it worth it anyway?

      (chorus:)
      When the music plays
      Sings me a river
      I'll jump on in
The cold don't make me shiver
      When the music plays
      Sings me a river
      I will float downstream

Life on the road another show to play
There's so much love how could I turn away
Nothing is certain so I'll learn to pray
      It's only life then anyway

      (chorus)

Picking up those pieces of the broken ways
Stuck inside your black and white
      when life is gray
I know it's not fair that's the price we pay
So close your eyes and it will be ok

      (chorus)

So my music play now and sing me home
Music play and I won't feel alone
My music play now and drown my sorrow
Music play until today becomes tomorrow
      Today becomes tomorrow (x3)
      When today becomes tomorrow

      (chorus)

      I will float downstream

        From the Yahoo list:

        Hey everyone,

I know that the guys are very grateful for all of the kind words and
well-wishes expressed here over the past 24 hours. I know I'll miss
Zac and his songs as much as anyone and am so thankful for his
contribution over the past couple of years that I've been a regular on
the rail. I join you all in wishing Zac and the band much success
        through this transition.

I also wanted to mention that none of the bands upcoming shows are
impacted by Zac's departure. All of the Midwest shows (Madison,
Chicago, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Covington, Stevens Point, and
Minneapolis) *are* going on as scheduled and the band is excited to be
having long-time friend and collaborator Matt Butler (from the
Everyone Orchestra) joining in on drums for most of the Midwest and
Colorado NYE runs. I also know that Matt will be joining the band in
the studio in early-2009, so that's something to look forward to as
well as the band starts recording their newest material and maybe even
dusting off some older stuff that is yet to be recorded.

Thanks again, everyone, for showing how genuinely supportive and
positive this community can be. We're all very lucky to have one
        another in our lives.

Midwest Melters: keep us all posted on the upcoming shows, please!

        Much love,
        Michael

I will definitely miss Zac but I can only appreciate that he knows what he needs right now and this move is the right one for him. I wish him all the best.

And Matt Butler joining in for some shows?! That's pretty awesome. Maybe he'll join them for their January bay area and Caspar shows too (crossing fingers!!)?

Since I posted the original, I'll post this msg from the band too:

    Fare Thee Well, Zac
    Friends and Family,

Following the announcement of Zac's departure, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support through this transition. While we are very excited about the future of HBR, we hope it goes without saying that Zac will be greatly missed. We wish our brother Zac nothing but the best and wish him great success in his future endeavors. Although Zac has already played his last show with HBR, we hope you will join us in continuing to honor him: Our band and community would not be the same without Zac's tremendous contributions.

As we look toward the future, the band remains excited about continuing to play shows, produce music, connect with new fans, and contribute to our community. Today, we head off to the Midwest for a two-week tour that will bring us through some of our favorite towns. We are excited that our long-time friend and collaborator Matt Butler (Everyone Orchestra) will join us on drums for most of these shows. Matt will also join us (along with Phil Ferlino of New Monsoon) at some shows on our upcoming New Year's run in Denver. As HBR evolves, we look forward to seeing you in the Midwest, Colorado, and during our California and East Coast shows in January.

We also are excited to get into the studio early next year to begin work on our next studio album, which Tim Bluhm (Mother Hips) will produce. Matt Butler will join us for the recording, and we are getting more and more excited about this project each day as we rehearse and narrow the song selection. We've been away from the studio for too long, and we can't wait to go back.

Thanks again, everyone, for all of your support, and we hope to see you soon!

    -HBR
